2003 07h Antelope Canyon to Bryce : On July 14, Jean and I left Farmington, NM and headed toward Bryce Canyon. We had lunch in Page, AZ and decided to take a sightseer's tour of the Antelope Canyon Slot Canyons. There's no getting to these things on your own. Narrow sand trails lead through tortuously twisted corridors of tortuously twisted sandstone. These hallways were created by water washing through cracks, widening the cracks and carving serendipitous swashes and sweeps throughout the stone corridors. Only a little sunlight sneaks into the slot canyons and only around midday. But the way it plays off the walls creates stunning art. So hey, why not take a camera in there and snap some shots? Yoda slowly squints, frowns, and swivels his head 'no'. But you go in anyway, only to learn this place is impossible to photograph. You come out humbled, knowing you really should learn your camera and its proper use. And next time, Jedi, don't forget to bring the tripod. I threw in a few bonus shots taken upon passing through Red Rock Canyon en route to Bryce Canyon. And a couple of night shots taken from the rim of Bryce Canyon. One is a 30 second exposure.

2003 07g Chaco Canyon : On July 13, Jean and I saw Heather and Tyler off from the delightfully small Durango Airport. We then headed south into New Mexico. Peter Urone, a physics professor at Sac State told me about a mysterious and little-known Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan) ruin called Chaco Canyon, and we off to investigate. Just south of Nageezi (more a dot on a map than an actual place), you turn onto a county road. This leads to a washboard dirt road. Which takes you to the park, seventeen miles away. You'll be washboarding it for the better part of an hour before you see the entrance sign for the park, so don't be in a hurry.

2003 07e Grand Canyon : On July 7, we packed up and drove from Mesa Verde to The Grand Canyon, with a stop at Four Corners and a viewpoint/trading post along a southeastern 'tributary canyon.' We stopped at Desert View and Grand View viewpoints along the South Rim before settling in at the Kachina Lodge. I took a pre-dawn photo walk along the Rim Trail the next day. Then a hike below the rim along the Bright Angel Trail. We ended the day at Hopi Point. The next day, we took a float trip through nearby Glen Canyon. The next day, I trekked down the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge.
