2006 06 Sequoia and Kings Canyon : Grades were turned in and jury duty evaporated, so it was time to get out of town. Off to Sequoia National Park! From June 19 through June 23, I worked my way up from the bottom of Sequoia (Three Rivers/Mineral King Area) up to Kings Canyon. Along the way I climbed to the top of Moro Rock, to the bottom of Crystal Cave, and to the brink of Mist Falls. Moro Rock isn't such a bad climb, but you tread 380 steps to get to the top. The Mineral King Road is perhaps the most three dimensional road I have travelled. Just under 700 curves, not to mention the ups and downs; 25 miles and two hours each way. I visited the must-see General Sherman Tree (largest living organism despite having lost a tree-sized branch last winter). I walked the Congress Trail of Giant Sequoias, whereupon I came across a bear that was allegedly breakfasting on brochette of Bambi (extra rare). Later that day, I trekked down to Crystal Cave. Whereupon I came across a snake that clearly had someplace to be. The biggest walk was to Mist Falls, a nine mile sojourn out past The End of The Road in Kings Canyon. Along the way, I was captivated by the cascading rapids of the runoff season, and an orange butterfly, and two California Sisters (butterflies).

2003 06 Kings Canyon : Mid-June, I visited Kings Canyon. East of Fresno, west of Death Valley and the peaks of the Sierra Nevadas. Just a weekend jaunt to take a stab at getting to know the new camera, a Canon EOS 10D and its lenses, Canon 17-40 mm f/4 L and 28-135 mm f/3.5-6.7 IS.
