2005 03 Spring Break Zion Bryce : For Spring Break 2005 (late March), I was joined by my buddy Rick Bennett for a tour of southwestern Utah's national parks. We met up in Salt Lake City and headed south. A quick side trip into the Kolob Canyon section of Zion turned out to be a bit more of an adventure. We navigated into some of Zion's hidden corners, found Springdale's finest eatery (Oscar's), spent some time with a tree in the East Mesa section of Zion, and motored north and up to Bryce. It was still winter at 8000 ft, so we explored Kodachrome Basin (5000 ft, summer) and Red Canyon (6500 ft, early spring). The weather left something to be desired, but it was great traveling with Rick--my best friend since before kindergarten. (Even if he made me sit through that Rocky marathon at Ruby's!)

2003 07j Bryce to Zion : On Tuesday, July 15, Jean and I packed out of Bryce Canyon and headed south for the relatively short drive to Zion National Park. It's downhill all the way. The temperature and humidity rose as the elevation dropped. Zion, as it turns out, is a swamp located in the desert. The incongruity makes Zion a wonder of greens and reds as the verdant foliage bursts from the Navajo sandstone. Ancient water leaks from the cliff walls along the canyon, promoting plant and animal life throughout the park. We paid a visit to the Weeping Wall, took the Riverside Walk toward The Narrows, and I hiked the Emerald Pools Trail. We stayed at the historic Zion Lodge.

2003 07i Bryce Canyon : Bryce Canyon is a photographer's paradise. Throw a camera at this place and you'll go home with more calendar shots than you can possibly use. No eye for composition? No skill or technique? First day with the new camera? First day with A camera? Doesn't matter! Anyway, our first trek was out to Bryce Point at the south end of the amphitheater (or 'amplitheater,' as most people called it). We hiked north along the rim trail. Jean made it to Inspiration Point; I continued to Sunset Point. Later, we drove south to the various viewpoints, gaining elevation all the way to Rainbow Point. The next day, I rose early to get some morning shots at Sunrise Point (it's required; they see you with a camera and they make you do that). Bryce Canyon photog technique: see the shot, shoot the shot, walk ten feet and repeat.
